Wind Power Development in Eeyou Istchee

The Cree Development Corporation is leading an exercise to identify areas where wind power could potentially coexist with Cree values and land users.

There are currently no wind energy projects in Eeyou Istchee. No decision has been made and no location has been chosen.

In accordance with the Cree Nation Energy Policy and the CDC's early-engagement approach, land users and community members are engaged before the design of any potential project.

The current work only aims to identify potential areas where wind power could work, and — using the same criteria — areas that would be unsuitable for it.

How areas are assessed

Three criteria

Social acceptability

Whether a location works for the land users and communities closest to it.

Technical feasibility

Wind speed, distance to substations and transmission lines, and buildable terrain.

Economic viability

Whether a project at a location could make sense over the long term.

Areas that would be unsuitable

Using the same criteria, some areas are identified as No-Go — places where wind development would not be considered:

  • Protected areas
  • Lakes and watercourses
  • Areas of cultural and environmental significance
  • Areas with low wind
  • Areas too far from the electric network
